1900 Building

1900 Shawnee Mission Pkwy, Mission Woods, KS 66205

Custom chalked oak panels surrounding three-story spiral staircase

Originally built in 1966, the 1900 Building along Shawnee Mission Parkway, near the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, was renovated and expanded in 2014. After discovering that the original blueprints called for a third floor, the owner decided to follow through with that vision. A custom-built steel spiral staircase was added to connect the three levels and provide a dramatic feature for the center of the Class A office building. Square One Studio was charged with engineering and installing the wooden panels surrounding the staircase and applying the wooden handrails. The design called for different sizes, grains, and thicknesses of wooden panels, all designed to snap together during installation.

Materials Used: Chalked oak veneer

Services Provided: We sourced the chalked oar veneer from overseas and planned out how each panel would vary in size, thickness, and wood grain according to the architect’s design. We engineered all of the panels, cut each to specifications, and coordinated installation onsite.
